Pasadena, California, nestled against the San Gabriel
mountains, was my childhood home.  After working on the
Alaska Railroad and serving in the military I returned to
California to finish my education at UCLA, graduating with
a degree in history and a teaching credential. My family
located to rural Alpine, 30 miles east of San Diego, where
I taught High School for 30 years.  In addition to our
Alpine home we are lucky to have a little cabin on the east
slope of  Palomar Mountain as a wilderness retreat.

A two week raft trip on the Colorado River after retirement
brought me into contact with Santa Fe artist Peter Nesbit
who encouraged and inspired me to capture the beauty of
the natural landscape in oils.  Since then I have been
focused on “plein air” painting in the mountains, deserts
and foothills of California.

My pallette is limited---just yellows, blues, and reds, plus
white. I do not think any of nature’s greens can come out
of a tube, so I constantly mix.  Most of my work is on 9 x
12 linen panels which can easily be carried into the field
with my pochade box.  Larger works are done in the
studio, based on location sketches.

I admire and am inspired by the early California
expressionists and their ability to capture the unique light
of our natural landscape and share the passion they had
for rendering this quiet magnificence.

It is my fervent wish that my work will inspire others to help
preserve what remains of our rapidly vanishing natural
landscape.
